Hello there. I'm glad I found this community...I'd like to ask a favor of all of you. I've a friend who's going to be in Japan for a while, and I have given him money so he can buy me some Japanese-language history books. But, although he knows the topics I'm interested in, he wants me to name him some specific book titles to look for. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any concerning the information I want to find. Right now my interest is the Sengoku Jidai, particuraly the late Uesugi clan. The rivarly between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, Uesugi Kagetora, and the Otate no Ran are my main concerns (I've also got a weird fixation with Tokugawa era boy prostitutes, but if I had my poor friend go out in public and buy books on that, he'd cry). It can be said that I'm a little more fascinated by the personalities involved than the historical events themselves...

So, could anyone name me a few titles, please? Some English-language book suggestions would also be appreciated. Thank you very much.

There are also a number of books in English that you can order through Amazon, or some such service, on the topic of shudo or wakashudo (ie: "homosexuality" in the Edo period and previous eras). They don't deal with boy prostitutes exclusively, but I've found them a helpful in-depth view of the overall field. It's a shame you won't find much on the subject in Japan, or in Japanese -- they seem intent on covering up that very important aspect of their cultural history.

-"Cartographies of Desire" by Gregory M. Pflugfelder (my personal favorite on the subject)
-"Male Colors" by Gary P. Leupp
-"The Great Mirror Of Male Love" by Ihara Saikaku (some literature on the subject by a highly respected author in the Edo period, dealing with male-male relationships amongst commoners, samurai, kabuki actors, and prostitutes)
-"The Love of the Samurai: A Thousand Years of Japanese Homosexuality" by Tsuneo Watanabe (another good resource from actual Japanese authors and historians, but hard to find as it's been long out of print)
